We had a great time Monday night talking about the 8 Steps to Becoming a Better Manager and how it starts internally. It has to start with you!

Here is a review of the key thoughts: 

1) Become self-aware of your Strengths and Weaknesses.

  • Ask your friends, “What am I great at? What am I bad at?”

 “You will grow the most in your areas of greatest strength.”  Marcus Buckingham

2) Become aware of your Feelings and Emotions.

  • Emotions will change based on your focus.
  • Feelings are based on your BS (Belief Systems).

Without authenticity you are certain to become stagnant, superficial and phony.

Diligence – A learnable skill that combines creative persistence, a smart working effort, rightly planned, rightly performed in a timely efficient and effective manner to attain a result that is pure and of the highest quality of excellence.

The Power of Focus:

  1. You move towards what you focus on.
  2. Focus on others.
  3. Your focus will change your outlook.
  4. Focus on learning – grow yourself.
  5. Focus on results. The ones you want and the ones you are getting.
  6. Create a habit of focus.

Transport Canada

We recently experienced our first PVI.  We had two Transport Canada inspectors come through and have a look through our operation.

I have to say the experience wasn’t bad.  They were pleasant to deal with and only had constructive criticism for me.  I don’t mind a little constructive criticism because it only makes us better and stronger.

I think I’ve always possessed the wrong perspective when it comes to authority and Transport Canada.  I’ve always heard terrible things and there are a plethora of horror stories between inspectors and operations.  When you stop to think about it though, we should be on the same side.  What is the goal behind regulations and Transport Canada’s mandate?  I believe it to be public safety.  There is a lot of potential for damage and injury when it comes to aviation and they are only trying to protect the general public.  I also believe public safety to be a cause worth chasing.  So here we are, an Approved Maintenance Organization (AMO) and Transport Canada.  We have entered into an agreement together via our Maintenance Policy Manual (MPM) and they are just trying to hold us accountable to carry out our work using methods that have been agreed upon between us.  We are on the same team.  We are all fighting for a safe and effective means to travel.

Transport Canada is holding me (as the accountable executive and person responsible for maintenance) accountable to perform our maintenance exactly how we have said we will do it, just as I would and should hold my coworkers and subcontractors accountable for their part in the story.  At the same time ensuring that we are not operating outside the regulations (CAR’s).  In essence, they are protecting me and our AMO.

So I send a big thank you to our inspectors, Doug Walchuck and Jack Simms, for giving me a “poke in the ribs” and keeping me on course.

Becoming more

Maybe my perspective is a little off being a younger “millenial” but I often wonder how I can make this more than just a workplace.  I dream of a shop that is fun to work at.  I dream of a work place that holds more than just coworkers.  I dream of a workplace that has “family” working together.  Can it be done and still progress and compete in the corporate world?  I don’t know.

I’m just a guy with a vision and dream.  Whether or not this stuff is possible remains to be seen.

Like any growing organization, we struggle with relationships between coworkers.  Being the boss and a people pleaser, I’m learning that I cannot always do both.  I must be willing to make the hard decisions.  I must be the leader.  It’s not always fun, but as any entrepreneur knows, the learning must never end.
